Fertilizer for welioya farmers
The presence of the Sinhalese farmers in the Welioya area was a constant headache for the separatist Tamils in order to reach their illusionary homeland. However it was not easy to de-stabilize this farming communities due to the higher economical status compare to the people in other areas. Note the fact as; Tamil LTTE aggression is directly against the Sinhalese as a people but not just against a governmental body in the particular area just like in the whole country. But funds generated by taxing the majority Sinhalese poor have always been welcome for the education, economic developments etc. of the Tamils and have never been denied for the pre and post independence eras.
The farmers in Welioya made their living mainly by cultivating the paddy thanks to the Mahaweli irrigation systems.
It is in paramount importance of remembering a prominent figure with due respect of supporting the farmers in Northern and Eastern areas of Sri Lanka who is Mr D.S. Senanayake, a member of land commission, later minister of Agriculture and lands (1931 -1947), later became the first prime minister in Sri Lanka (1947-1952).(Click Here)
He had dedicated himself to the up-liftment of a miserable peasantry in mainly at North and East of Sri Lanka by the development of “colonization schemes” which were large scale projects benefitting the agricultural population in general (without heed to race, religion or caste) and village expansions were to benefit. To avoid the external dependence, only the particular village was undertaken as a single unit in development. The result was the creation of dedicated farmers in a village system who helped and started the old definition of Sri Lanka to be a reality again as “The granary of East”. The farmers in Welioya area was the sons of farmers in D.S. Senanayake's era who additionally faced a hindrance as LTTE Tamil terrorism compare to their fathers. Though they had enough protection from the Sri Lankan army, no one ever thought that the weak point of their living style which is based on Water and paddy cultivation would have been in trouble. The separatist racist LTTE did not or could not directly attacked them but always vigilant of jeopardize the farmers by de-stabilize either an irrigation system or the paddy cultivation. LTTE had carried out an easy but an inhuman, cowardly task where no other terrorist group dares to think of. That was the burning the ripen paddy fields at night rather disturbing any irrigation systems. Thousands of acres of paddy had burnt to ashes hence the people became handicapped within an overnight.
It was an arrow hit on target and the farmers became victims of another heinous crime which LTTE separatist group cunningly carried out.
The news soon spread among the patriotic communities and Venerable Chandaratana Thero at Tantirimalei main temple had immediately informed Helabima organization about the status as well as recommended the possible remedies.
As a result, the Helabima organization had immediately funded 4,00, 000 Rs (Approximately 4000 USD) in order to purchase the fertilizer and paddy via Venerable Chandaratana Thero. The Helabima organization requested the farmers to use the fund in circular way such as a loan system in a bank.
Though this is not recognized as a traditional project completed by the Helabima organization, this timely taken action made the farmers to continue the paddy cultivation and then faced the threat of Tamil terrorism. In a joint meeting with Sri Lankan Army and Helabima organization later commenced in a Welioya farmer's society, the protection of paddy fields also had pointed out. ‘
Almost a decade elapsed after this incident and such a disaster not happened again due to the unity of the farmers inspired by immediate funds made out of blood donations, regular fund raising events by Helabima members spread all over the world.
